Snoring and Sleep Apnea Dental Appliances

It is estimated that 1 in 5 American adults suffer from some form of obstructive sleep apnea, though most cases generally go undiagnosed. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, is a disorder in which breathing is briefly and repeatedly interrupted during sleep. The “apnea” in sleep apnea refers to a breathing pause that lasts at least ten seconds. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles in the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open, despite efforts to breathe. One symptom of sleep apnea is chronic snoring, which affects approximately 30% – 50% of the US population. A sleep study can be used to diagnose and determine the best way to treat sleep apnea and snoring issues.

Dr. Westendorf is pleased to offer a variety of dental appliances to treat snoring and sleep apnea. Our office features custom-made oral appliances to help eliminate upper airway obstruction by repositioning the jaw and tongue. Many patients find this to be an effective and minimally invasive solution to their snoring and/or sleep apnea.

Additionally, Dr. Westendorf is excited to offer a free overnight screening for sleep apnea issues*. This painless screening involves the use of a small wrist monitor worn through the night in the comfort of your own home. By measuring pulse and oxygen levels, this device can help determine if a dental appliance is necessary or if additional steps must be taken in order to combat snoring and sleep apnea issues.

*Michael T. Westendorf, D.D.S. cannot diagnose sleep apnea but can screen for potential sleep apnea indicators and work cooperatively with your healthcare provider(s) or cardiologist so that you can gain the most benefit from these risk assessments.
